NEWMARKET TOWN 0 v. IPSWICH WANDERERS 1
RIDGEONS PREMIER LEAGUE
SATURDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2006
Wanderers welcomed back Ricky Martin and Lee Smith and new signing, but old Wanderer, Paul Westren. Dean Tournay–Godfrey partnered Sam Banya up front But David Grimwood had returned to university.
The first half belonged to Wanderers who had the majority of the possession and better football but Newmarket always looked dangerous with youngsters Reed and Olive up front and Jones in midfield.

Jamie Stannard needed a brief spell to recover from a challenge with Reed on the edge of the area and the Newmarket striker tried his luck with an overhead kick that landed in the side netting. Dean Tournay–Godfrey scored the Wanderers goal on 20 minutes with a header from one of Bradley Barber's many accurate and highly dangerous corners.

The referee's assistant spotted that the ball had crossed the line despite Abbott's efforts to clear when on his back tangled in the netting!

Chris Tracey and Jason Dozzell marshalled the Wanderers back four and allowed Newmarket little sight of goal although Newmarket skipper Werthmann's header from Church's free kick on 31 mins was saved by Jamie Stannard, Olive's snap shot on 34 mins ricocheted off the far post and Matthew Cunningham had to clear Olive's header off the line from Abbott's corner on 37 mins. Newmarket's final ball was tending to be wayward and Wanderers were giving away too many free kicks, especially around the danger areas near the penalty area.
At the other end Dean Tournay–Godfrey was finding room on the right with Keith Hetherington, both of whom kept Youngs busy and, as the half came to an end another of Bradley Barber's corners caused panic in the Newmarket defence until the post came to their rescue from Chris Tracey's header. Then Youngs was forced to palm Dean Tournay–Godfrey's shot away after good play and a perfect pass from Keith Hetherington.

The second half was a more even affair with Newmarket striving for the equaliser and Wanderers looking to give themselves a bigger margin. Chris Tracey was on target with his head on 49 mins, following another of Bradley Barber's highly accurate corners, only to see Abbott clear off the line and then, moments later at the other end, Reed had the ball in the Wanderers net but the effort was ruled offside. Each side had chances to turn the game in their favour and on the hour, Sam Banya laid off to Keith Hetherington and he outpaced three defenders before putting his hot over the bar. Rene Swann's first touch, on as substitute, was to put the ball over the rapidly advancing Newmarket 'keeper but also the bar.

The complexion of the game changed when Werthmann was sent off for his second caution and tempers were getting a bit frayed with what was generally acknowledged to be a poor performance for the referee. Wanderers ended the game with Chris Tracey's header going agonisingly close after Youngs punched clear Bradley Barber's free kick.
These three points keep Wanderers in 5th place, having lost only once in the last ten games.
